[Savage Worlds Shaintar] The Snake Cult, pt. 2

This past Monday was a continuation of my attempt to use Savage Worlds (Shaintar fantasy setting) to do an impression of my Vampire: the Masquerade games from the mid to late 90s: lots of politicking and the like.

Highlights:
* Koraa (female orc PC) won a duel with Trevan, an inexperienced Elvish noble, but didn’t kill him; Bronwyn (human PC cleric of Cinarra) healed the crestfallen elf and gave him some encouragement (which he needed since he was taken down in one shot!)
* The party bought a property in Low City (an inn) and began converting it to an outpost for their ranger order – what was really cool was that last night one of the players sent me a floorplan she created for the outpost

* After charting out their nice new outpost, Bronwyn had a dream of a wolf who spoke with the voice of Cinarra asking him why he’d made no plans for a temple.  When Bronwyn tried to smooth talk his way out of it, the wolf replied, “Build something to me in a fortnight or you’ll be preaching in the streets until you do”  (I’ve decided a goddess of war is relatively direct and probably a bit egotistical)
* They resumed investigating the snake cult mentioned here, here and here.  The players utilized some interesting approaches to finding information, such as visiting a wig shop and gossiping, talking with a deeds merchant (aka a real estate agent) and working with the speaker of the labor collective (who they nearly insulted by asking her to provide them the names of laborers who do work underground to avoid the notice of the guard)
* The results of their searches was - they found out that the underground snake cult temple was recently destroyed (as in, someone hired some laborers to destroy any trace of it) and the person who originally hired them on the job that led them to the temple was found murdered
* The party gained a new PC, a local of the city who happened to be a very, very old elf calling himself Galean; Galean met with the local ratzen who had a clutch underneath the new outpost and came to an arrangement with them

The night wrapped up with the party deciding to continue investigations.  This is a game where I feel I’m avoiding the system at times and have to be reminded to call for rolls when I’m about to just go with it.  Why make people roll when you love the idea of “say yes or roll the dice”?  Its because the system is built on people rolling dice to enjoy their rewards (bennies).  Something I’m having to unlearn for this game system.  That, and some of the party wasn’t really built for the politicking and investigations, so I have to throw in other encounter types so everyone can play to their strengths.

  1. So of you are finding yourself avoiding the system, why are you using the system? What is Savage Worlds giving you in return? Did I already ask these questions? I’m getting a weird sense of deja vu.

  2. I’d like to try playing Savage World. It would be interesting to have you talk more about running this system, especially after the other styles of games you have been running recently.

  3. @JJ & Daniel I’m taking this to a new thread.

@JJ I don’t think we’ve talked about this specifically, but I’ve griped about SW before.
