[DnD] Under the Waterfall

This week my Monday face-to-face group finished up our dip into Keep on the Shadowfell.  We didn’t finish the module, not by a long-shot.  In fact, we finished up the sidetreks first and then ended the night with only the Keep left.  Want to hear about it?  Read on…
Highlights:

  • Since we ended the last fight outside a waterfall and saw a kobold retreat behind it, we decided to head back into town and lick our wounds, make a level and buy some supplies; I half expected an attack, but the kobolds stayed in their waterfall haven waiting for us
  • Skamos, the tiefling rogue, snuck into the waterfall and sniped a bigger kobold, then retreated back where we were waiting by some trees for cover; my eladrin wizard had climbed a tree and used the cover to put most of the minions to sleep while Miri the elven warlord picked off kobolds with her longbow and Lesl the halfling warlock and Skamos went toe to toe with the baddies near the riverbank; we wiped out the kobolds easily, which was nice
  • We waded into the waterfall after my eladrin insisted on casting the tenser’s floating disc ritual, which he then used as a magical umbrella; we were immediately attacked by Irontooth and his cronies, including another spell-chucker; the kobolds closed with us and my wizard was pretty ineffective; Lesl kept close and used her dagger instead of firing off some magic and I rolled like total crap, so we took lots of hits to get through this fight; it ended up with the group standing around Irontooth (the scariest kobold EVAR), moving in and out so he couldn’t hit two adjacent fighters while we kept our combat advantage and winnowed him down
  • Afterward, the DM asked if we would like to head to the dragon’s graveyard, which my eladrin was keen to visit; we had some time left for the night and he said it was really quick, so we went -my eladrin was easily duped by the thugs who were trying to waylay us at the dig site and we had a rough tumble with the lot of them; Lesl was quite helpful here, using her magic to good effect and Miri asked the group to huddle near her for some healing a la Inspiring Word that saved my guy’s bacon; but the hero of the day was Skamos who discovered just how awesome his backstab was (he’s a terror!)

Overall, this was a pretty fun night, even though it was just a string of three fights; we ended the session making third level and all agreed this was a good breaking point so Richard (the player of the rogue) could run something for us .

I have to say both my wife and I are looking forward to getting back to this on the rotation (I know, it surprises me, too).  The idea of doing some fighty stuff and then being able to try something different, makes it enjoyable.  The group was much more cohesive, used some group tactics and worked together.  I needed to let go of the need to interact with NPCs and to just have a good time around a battlemap with some gaming buddies.

Next week we make PCs for Lacuna Part 1 and play through our first mission!

  1. Rich, how long do these sessions last? You sum them up so packed-ly, and then I look at my PTA Sith Triumvirate multi-page scrollers for 4 hours of gameplay, and I wonder.

  2. I have the advantage of only describing three scenes above, all of which had very little role-playing, just die rolling. I used to write long AP reports, but got frustrated when I never saw replies on it (I’m thinking of my AP for a Play This With That Challenge last year on Story Games).

So now I just wait a couple days after the game so some of the details are a little fuzzy, then I bullet point up the stuff I still remember and try to fill in any vital details so it makes some kind of sense.

What I find most people respond to are my thoughts and reactions to what was happening, not the descriptors of how it happened in exacting details.

    And I’m lazy… did I mention that?
