Thanks for the shout-out; glad you found the article interesting. I did write a follow-up to try to better explain what D&D is to me (since I sort of didn’t cover that the first time around ^_-). It’s at this link.
Good show. Always enjoyed plundering modules for ideas, myself.

Thanks for all the kind words about my blog. I really appreciate all the things you had to say.
As for a gateway game, there are lots of great games for introducing kids and young teens to RPGs, things like “The Secret Life of Gingerbread Men” and stuff like that. The problem is, while they’re great if you or I want to RP with kids, the average 13-year-old with $20 burning a hole in his pocket isn’t even aware of them. To that kid, D&D is RPGs, and $20 won’t even get him the PHB. If he’s at the store, he might see the latest CCG or an older videogame he can buy, but RPGs won’t be found in Walmart or Sears anymore. His bookstore probably carries D&D and might have some White Wolf stuff, but he’d have to be pretty lucky to find anything by Green Ronin or Mongoose. Jeff Mejia’s “Legends of Steel” would have been perfect for me when I was 13, but unless you know to look for it, it’s doubtful you’ll ever find it.

Hey guys.
Excellent episode. This seems to be a hot topic at the moment. Several other podcasts have discussed it and had similar conclusions as you did. Thanks for the Zak Arneson link. I knew of Shadows but not of his other stuff. And that he worked on Lego Star Wars which my son and I are currently playing. For my part, my kids and I play boardgames mostly but I recently started a Savage Worlds campaign in which two of them are particupating.
I liked the segment on hacking modules. I tend to do that a lot. I like to hack Dungeon magazine ones (more modules for one price) and buy older ones on the cheap to hack. The idea of breaking them up or having several ready to go is a good one that I had not thought of. I am going to use it.
I like the show and the new format.
Thanks,
tomg
